Artificial Intelligence (AI) has now made it possible to transcribe speech to text surpricingly accurate. Google are using this on YouTube to add auto-generated captions for videos in some of the most common languages.
This service from Google is free of charge and a fantastic help to hearing impaired and death people for which I am very grateful! ๐งก๐
But. Unfortunately even though the auto-generated captions are getting more and more accurate they can't be perfect. This may seem to be a small problem, but if you are trying to learn something new and unfamliar from a video it can make it much more difficult. You have to read fast, guess some words and simultaenously comprehend the lecture. (It is a bit like trying to learn something from a lecture in a foreign language where there are a lot of potentially important words that you have not learned yet.) (FIXME: add references for this!)
The idea behind EasyCapEd is to make it easy to correct single words that AI got wrong. And punctuation which is a bit hard for AI yet.
Unlike other caption editors I have seen it will keep the timestamps on the words. The timestamps are very important since they make it possible to show the captions word by word synced with the video. (Maybe there are now other editors that can do this too?)
Another benefits of EasyCapEd is that it runs in the web browser and therefore requires no installation. And you can use it both on a desktop and a mobile.
You can also collaborate over the internet. A hearing impaired person might mark a word as wrong and ask someone who hears to help correct it.
Basic usage is free, but for some services on the internet we have to pay so we must charge users for this. See the Donate or pay page for more info.
The video is on YouTube when you edit captions with EasyCaped. However the captions you are editing are on your current device or in your private part of the EasyCapEd cloud.
EasyCapEd never changes anything on YouTube.
